On the 16th of September B-2 will release the band`s ninth studio record #16plus – the title that is leaving the audience asking questions whether the new album should have Parental Advisory and Explicit Content logos.
We were working on the record when the whole story with TV restrictions came along forbidding minors or under-16s from watching some TV programs. Everybody was discussing new rules and we though of giving our new record the title #16plus. It means that sometimes we find under a ban something that doesn`t really have to be forbidden.
The answer to the main question is simple: you will not have to hide the new B-2 record or the audio files from your kids or younger siblings.
In a way our new record is an address to 16+ generation. It is also a come back to our “16+”: we made our versions of the songs that influenced Leva and me when we were teenagers. We chose 3 such songs: “Daite ognya” by the band “Aliance”, “Napman” by “Auction” and “Robot” by Yury Chernavsky and Vladimir Matetsky.
Covers representing Leva and Shura`s “16+” make the bonus part or the album while the main part consisting of 12 songs in the address to the generation mentioned by Shura.
Asking musicians to describe in a few words what their album is about is the same as wondering what they were doing for the last couple of years when they were making the record – who they met, what they felt, what influenced them and what they were thinking about. Not an easy question to answer in a few words.
The best way to get the answer to all those questions is to listen to the new songs.
Every track is a story of its own: important at all times story in the song “Ne umeret` molodym”, hot issues in “16+” or “Zabrali v armiyu”; there is a humorous essay about parents-in-law called “Mat`” or a song born after a trip to Mexico - “Ostrov slomannyh igrushek”.
I got the idea of the song and the music for it even before we went to Mexico. It was a fortunate turn of events: while I was thinking of the song when in Mexico we went to this strange and mysterious place called Island of the dolls. The place matched perfectly with the idea of the song and later when Yanik and me were writing the lyrics we put on the table some photos from the island that inspired us along with my stories about the trip. Such fantastic places always leave imprint that will become a new song one day.
The audience is familiar with two of the new songs: the first album single #Hipster and a track made with the band “Smyslovye Gallucinacii” “Tyomnye nebesa” that holds the top position of “Chartova dyuzhina” chart on “Nashe radio” for several weeks .
“Tyomnye nebesa” is not the only collaboration on #16plus: Igor Zhuravlev performs with B-2 their cover song “Daite Ognya” and Elizaveta features on 2 tracks - “Tolko lyubov pochinit” and “Muzyka bez prichin” by Mihail Karasev who takes part in creation of every B-2 record. For this particular song not only he wrote music and lyrics but also played some music instruments: guitar, ukulele and bass. Another guest musician – “Cruise” ex-member Valery Gaina – played guitar on this track.
We wanted to have a Jeff Beck style guitar solo on “Muzyka bez prichin” so I invited our friend and a brilliant guitarist Valery Gaina to work with us and he played this solo for the song.
B-2 were working on the record in different countries. All the arrangements were made by Leva B-2, B-2 band, Andrey Lebedev, Evgeniy Pankov, Oleg Chekhov, Andrey Belyi, Yuriy Usachev and Mikhail Karasev in Moscow, the songs were also recorded in the capital of Russia in Sergey Bolshakov studio “Parametrika”, the mixing was done in London by Adrian Bushby and the mastering – in Los Angeles by Brian “Big Bass” Gardner. Leva and Shura B-2 were also producers of the record.
The band has already filmed a number of videos to the new songs: the first one was the #Hipster video that had over a million views as of July 2014. In Summer B-2 filmed 3 videos: to the third single “Zabrali v armiyu”, title track “16+” and to the song “Three santimetra nad zemlyoi” that will feature in a new movie bySergey Puskepalis “Clinch”.
“Three santimetra nad zemlyoi” is one of the three songs from #16plus that were used in the movies. Another song - “Tol`ko lyubov pochinit” (feat Elizaveta) – will feature in the soundtrack for a film called “Mothers-3” that will come out during Winter holidays. Leva and Shura are also guest stars in the movie.
The third movie-song is “Ostrov slomannyh igrushek” - the first B-2 song to be ever used in an animated movie – a fairy tale called “Snow Queen – 2” where Leva and Shura voiced two of the characters.
The live premiere of the album #16plus will take place in Saint Petersburg`s Ice Palace on the 14th of November and on the 20th of November B-2 will play Moscow Crocus City Hall.
